Pomona Half-Mile - October 13

Rancho Dominguez, Calif. - October 17, 2012 - Saddlemen rider Jared Mees was crowned the 2012 GNC Combined Champion as Bryan Smith claimed the GNC Expert Twins Title at the AMA Flat Track finale this weekend. Saddlemen hosted a VIP hospitality suite at the Pomona Half-Mile and celebrated the Saddlemen sweep of Grand National Championships after a long and successful Flat Track season.

AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship
Saddlemen riders have logged strong performances all season long in the Flat Track GNC class, and Saturday’s final round at the LA County Fairplex in Pomona, CA was no different. Brad Baker led a group of 9 Saddlemen riders that placed in the top-10 with a 2nd place finish. Bryan Smith joined Baker on the podium, but this 3rd place for Smith was more meaningful than most. Fellow Saddlemen racers Rob Pearson and JD Beach rounded out the top-5.

Bryan Smith was in 3rd place in the GNC Expert Twins standings heading into the last race, but was able to make up the 4-point deficit with his sixth podium appearance of the season to claim the 2012 GNC Expert Twins Title. Sammy Halbert finished in 2nd in the class and Jared Mees finished 4th.

Mees had already taken the GNC Expert Singles title following Round 12 in Illinois. With a 12-point lead over Halbert in the GNC Combined standings following the Tucson Half-Mile, Mees’ 8th place finish in Pomona was more than enough to make him the 2012 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship as well as the Lucas Oil No. 1 plate. Sammy Halbert finished 2nd in the Combined standings, and Bryan Smith and Brad Baker finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

Other notable accomplishments to come out of the Flat Track Awards Banquet included Briar Bauman receiving the Saddlemen Rookie of the Year award. Bauman finished in the top-10 eight times this season in the GNC class and ended the season in 12th place in the final GNC Combined standings. Jared Mees and Jake Shoemaker both finished 1st in their respective classes in total mileage, earning them each the Sunoco “Go the Distance Award.” Several other Saddlemen riders finished in the top-5 in the “Go the Distance” race for most miles accrued during the season of racing.

While the Pro Singles class is anything but decided, Saddlemen racers struggled to add points to their season tallies at Santa Rosa, with just three riders competing in the main event. Jake Shoemaker led the way with a 4th place finish, while fellow Saddlemen riders Shayna Texter and James Monaco finished 8th and 10th, respectively.

With just two rounds remaining, the Pro Singles class is very much up for grabs as Shoemaker finds himself just 11 points behind the leader. Texter has put together a consistent season and moved up to 6th place this weekend, with a chance at cracking into the top 5. Monaco sits at 14th in the standings.

Jared Mees #9 earned a hard fought second place, coming through a "last chance" Semi-Final to start the Main on the third row. Mees passed 10 riders from the start to turn 2, and settled in with #1 Jake Johnson on the low, or inside line, hoping the track would come to them later in the race. Jared made up another six positions to finish second behind #7 Sammy Halbert, despite an oil cooler leak that all but blinded him on the last few laps. Mees retains the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship points lead with only the Tuscon and Pomona Half-Miles remaining in 2012.
