Springfield Short Track & Springfield Mile II Race Report

Rancho Dominguez, Calif. - September 18, 2012 - Saddlemen’s flat track racers put on a clinic this weekend as the AMA Pro Flat Track Series returned to the Illinois State Fairgrounds for the rescheduled Springfield Short Track and Springfield Mile II. Saddlemen finished the weekend with top honors in three of the four class races, with the highlight coming as Jared Mees was crowned the 2012 GNC Expert Singles Champion.

AMA Pro Grand National Championship
The Springfield race weekend kicked off with Saturday’s Expert Singles finale on the short track. Saddlemen’s Henry Wiles took top honors following a tight battle with fellow Saddlemen racer Brad Baker, who grabbed the holeshot off the pole. Jared Mees joined Wiles and Baker on the podium as Saddlemen Rookie of the Year hopeful Briar Bauman finished 4th.

The action continued on Sunday as racers took on the seventh round of the GNC Expert Twins racing at the Springfield Mile. Bryan Smith claimed his second victory of the season after surrendering his lead to Sammy Halbert late in the race. The two Saddlemen riders were joined on the podium by Jared Mees, as young up-and-comer JD Beach took 4th aboard his Saddlemen Flat Track seat.

It took two holeshots for Saddlemen’s Dan Bromley to claim his first Pro Singles victory on Saturday, as a crash and red flag resulted in a restart with just five laps remaining. Bromley stayed cool and managed to hold on for the Short Track win. Fellow Saddlemen rider Jake Shoemaker joined him in the top five.

Sunday’s Springfield Mile was even more dramatic, as Saddlemen’s Cody Johncox won by just .004 seconds over the second-place finisher. Johncox managed to make his way to the front for the final two laps and held on long enough for the first Pro Singles win of his career.

Saddlemen’s JD Beach has been the mark of consistency all season long, finishing in the top 10 in all but one race this year. The Road Race Factory/Red Bull rider finished 9th on Saturday, with fellow Saddlemen riders Joey Pascarella, Jake Zemke and Cory West behind him in 16th, 24th and 27th, respectively.

Sunday’s race would bring with it better results with Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki’s Cory West leading the way in 6th. Ducshop Racing’s Zemke followed in 7th and Beach finished 8th, while West’s teammate Pascarella finished 13th.

JD Beach rode his 13th and 14th straight top-10 finishes into 6th in the SportBike standings, with Jake Zemke just 5 points behind in 8th. West and Pascarella round out the top 10 with just 4 races remaining in the 2012 season.

Celtic Racing/Orient Express rider James Rispoli took top honors in Saturday’s race with authority, cruising to the finish line with the next rider nearly 12 seconds behind him. Teammate Corey Alexander finished Race 1 in 13th, and Jake Lewis finished in 15th.

Sunday’s contest was cut short as a collision ended the race after 16 of 19 scheduled laps. The reset race order landed Rispoli in 2nd aboard his Saddlemen Chicane seat. Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki’s Jake Lewis emerged from the pack to take 3rd place, as Alexander followed in 4th on his Saddlemen Sport seat.

Adelaide Masters' Series – Mondello Park

PJ Jacobsen took a debut Superbike victory on the short track at Mondello Park during the Adelaide Masters’ Series on Sunday on his Tyco Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superstock machine. He also took second and third placed finishes in two other Masters’ Superbike outings.

The 18-year-old New Yorker was primarily using the track time to prepare for this weekend’s Silverstone British championship round, but enjoyed the experience and hopes to return in October for the final round.

“Yeah it was a pretty good day,” said Jacobsen. “It was a case of really having to know the track to go quick, but although it was a bit bumpy we did okay against the local guys who had home advantage. It was nice to take a win and two other podium positions and the Tyco Suzuki worked awesome all day.

“Lee [Johnston] just got the best of me on the last lap of the Grand Final. I did get past at turn one, but ran a bit wide. I was lining him up for a pass at the last corner but he held me off, but it was a good day. I would have liked to have won all three races but it sets me up well for Donington Park. I feel awesome on the bike right now and I’m really looking forward to Donington where the aim is to finish on the box.”

Rancho Dominguez, Calif. - August 30, 2012 - Saddlemen is teaming up with AMA Flat Track superstar Jared Mees to offer fans the unique opportunity to go “Slidin’ with Jared Mees” at the Springfield Mile this weekend.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 14, 2012) - The second half of the 2012 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com and Lucas Oil started with a bang as the series returned to the oldest venue on the circuit. Peoria, IL and the Peoria Motorcycle Club's Race Park TT served as round nine of the 16 race series.

Just like the last seven years, Henry Wiles dominated the 25-lap national, leading every lap and winning by a margin of almost seven seconds. Repeating their finishes from last week in Castle Rock, WA, series points leader Jared Mees (Montgomeryville Cycle) was second and defending AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Champion Jake Johnson (Zanotti Racing) was a solid third.

Many felt Wiles' winning streak was in jeopardy as he has struggled of late with his potent Kawasaki, but mild-mannered Henry stepped out of the phone booth with his cape firmly attached.

"Everybody was getting nervous. People around me that I talk to sometimes on a weekly basis, I could tell they were nervous," said Wiles. "I said it will be ok, we will be up front. It's tough on a guy sometimes when you are not getting the finishes you know you can, but you are fighting something. We struggled with the bike setup and some mechanical problems, but I tell you, I wasn't frustrated. I know that some things are going to be harder than others."

Wiles win matches Chris Carr's Peoria record of eight consecutive wins. "A lot of people would think eight in a row is enough, but I don't, nine would be nice," warned Wiles. "I tell you what, it's a special thing to be able to come in here and tie Chris' eight. I don't think Chris gets enough credit for winning 13 races here. When you stop and look back, that's a lot of years. A lot of things happen in that amount of time."

"Guys were running good today. I knew the field would be tough," said Wiles. "I qualified fast. I had fast heat race and didn't do so well in the Dash."

Even though Wiles had been fast qualifier and fast heat winner, Sammy Halbert (Fredericktown Yamaha) got the hole-shot in the Dash for Cash and came away with the win. Wiles even had second place slip away as Mees slipped by on the last lap. Halbert's four lap Dash for Cash performance foretold his national problems as each trip over the big jump was an adventure.

Wiles got the lead on what would be an aborted start as Luke Gough (Nicely Motorsports / Skip Eaken Racing) fell heavily coming off the jump on lap one. Gough was unable to make the restart and was transported to a local hospital with a reported leg injury.

When the light flashed green for the 25-lap main event, Wiles shot to the front and it became a race for second.

"Just like last year, I just struggled on the starting line. Wiles popped me right off the line," said Mees. "He did exactly what he had to do. Sammy got in between us and kind of road blocked us a little bit. It is what it is. One of these days maybe I can get off with him and give him a run. We always come here in June and have a lot of dominance, then he puts it on us in the main event."

Wiles' day was not without stress including a major moment late in the race.

"I'm just proud of my team and my sponsors and my mechanic, Johnny (Olmstead). We had some problems in that Dash, but we made some changes to the bike," said Wiles. "I knew when I did the warm up lap that the bike was better. It was a relief. I said, 'Yes, this is going to make my life a little bit easier today.' On about lap 17 or 18 going into turn one I set my foot down, it all happened at just the wrong time. It was just all wrong timing, but I stuck my foot right in a hole, which is something that can happen and I've done it here before. The ground was really hard today. I was tapping it a little bit coming to the jump, I thought I stinking broke it. I knew that I would still be able to win the race if it was broke. I was on a mission today."
